Jazz Program

AGES 13-17

This program offers one week of immersion in the performance, theory, and history of jazz. We welcome students of all levels, from those whose study of jazz is just beginning to experienced improvisers. Through individual instruction from our expert faculty, students explore improvisation within the jazz idiom and examine the solos of jazz legends. Performances in combos and small ensembles improve listening skills, teamwork, and musicality; performances in large ensembles tackle big-band tunes by greats such as Count Basie and Thad Jones. Students also have the option to study the theoretical side of jazz through big-band arranging and composition classes.

Audition Requirements
There is no entry audition required for the Jazz Program; however, as part of their application all students must upload video files for ensemble placement purposes and to be considered for merit scholarships.
Audition should consist of two contrasting pieces that best represent the applicant’s level and accomplishment. A jazz standard is suggested as one of these pieces but not required, and students with no prior jazz experience are encouraged to apply. Please submit video recording, audio-only recordings will not be accepted. Supported video file types are avi, m4v, mov, mp4, mpeg, mpg, vob, wmv, mkv. There is also the option to copy YouTube links into the application instead of uploading files.
